It runs inside Motus, USDOT's new registration system. New enough that most people in the trade haven't touched it yet (Federal Register notice went out April 2026). Motus handles the full registration lifecycle for carriers, brokers and other registrants; this public search is the piece you don't need an account for.
The everyday use in a shop: the name painted on the door isn't always the legal name that belongs on the paperwork. This is where you settle that before an invoice or a test report goes out with the wrong entity on it.
Not the cargo tank facility search. This returns company records, not facility registration. Checking whether a shop is registered to work on tanks is a different tool.
